In August 2026, an AI-generated image began circulating on social media that purported to show a Moroccan officer preparing to throw a boulder at a migrant near the border of the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. While genuine footage captured by witnesses documented real clashes during a mass migration event in late July, the specific close-up image shared online was a fabrication designed to misrepresent the incident.
What happened
The viral image, which appeared on Facebook on August 2, 2026, depicted a guard in a green uniform and riot helmet threatening a man on a cliff. Despite commenters expressing outrage over the perceived brutality, the image was identified as a digital fabrication. Technical analysis revealed signs of AI manipulation, such as pixelated edges and distorted hands. A Google SynthID watermark, detected via OpenAI’s verification tool, confirmed the image was created using OpenAI tools.
The disinformation campaign exploited a genuine border crisis where tens of thousands of migrants rushed into Ceuta. While local media outlets like Tanja7 and Algeria Gate published authentic videos showing altercations between security forces and migrants in the border city of Fnideq, these videos were distinct from the fabricated image. The AI-generated file was falsely attributed to news agencies like Reuters and even shared with claims that it depicted an Israeli soldier in Gaza, demonstrating a pattern of cross-platform misuse. AFP Fact Check investigation confirmed that while real stone-throwing clashes occurred, the specific image circulating on social media was not a photograph of these events.
