Christopher Ashley Nimmons allegedly shared an AI-generated image on the UC Breaking News Instagram page for Southwest Florida. The image depicted Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno in full uniform, appearing to have a head injury while fleeing from two gunmen. The post was shared in the comments section of a news update regarding the death of a Lee County police dog.
Law enforcement linked the Instagram account used to post the image to Nimmons. He was subsequently apprehended during a traffic stop, where police discovered a firearm and a mobile phone inside his vehicle. Authorities confirmed that the phone number associated with the device matched the number linked to the Instagram account that published the synthetic image. Sheriff Marceno stated that threats of violence against law enforcement are taken extremely seriously, emphasizing that the use of AI will not protect individuals from legal consequences.
