A TikTok video promoting Alberta separatism recently gained thousands of views by featuring a deepfake of a University of Alberta student named Leah. The content, which utilized AI to advocate for independence, highlights the growing use of synthetic media to influence political discourse.

What happened

The video was posted by a TikTok account identified as the Alberta Radio Show. In the clip, a person presented as Leah, a student at the University of Alberta, emphatically urges viewers to support separatism to secure prosperity and protect rights. However, the individual in the video is a deepfake generated using GrokAI.

Technical indicators of the fabrication included flat, uncanny mannerisms and visual hallucinations, such as the Alberta flag in the background changing designs throughout the video. While the video was removed from some platforms, it remained accessible on others, occasionally accompanied by a Made with AI tag. This incident is part of a broader trend of AI-generated content being deployed online to push separatist narratives in Alberta ahead of the province's upcoming referendum.
