- Kyle Sultzaberger
The Steelton Fire Department convened an emergency board of directors meeting on June 23, 2026, following the circulation of an artificial intelligence-generated image that drew significant public backlash. The image, which depicted firefighter Kyle Sultzaberger in gear with various objects in the background, was perceived by borough officials and community members as having racial connotations.
What happened
The controversy centered on an AI-generated photo featuring Sultzaberger, who had been removed from his position as battalion chief two weeks prior to the incident. The image showed the firefighter holding a sign, with cigarettes on the ground and pretzel-shaped circles suspended in the air. Borough officials and other observers interpreted these shapes as resembling nooses, leading to accusations of racism. Sultzaberger denied any racial intent, stating that he did not view the image as having such implications.
Following an internal review, the Steelton Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors determined that the social media posts were created by a current member of the department using artificial intelligence, rather than by the former battalion chief as initially alleged. The department further noted that some of the associated social media posts were made by a former member who is no longer in good standing. The board emphasized that the situation does not reflect the values of the department and stated that the matter will be addressed according to internal by-laws and policies. As a result of the backlash, Sultzaberger expressed that he is reconsidering his future with the volunteer organization, while the department president noted that internal morale has been shaken by the negativity surrounding the event.
