A deepfake video surfaced on Facebook depicting a Fort Smith police officer recovering from a gunshot wound. The Fort Smith Police Department issued a news release asking the public not to share the video, stating it was harmful to the officer's family and friends.

What happened

The video, posted by the page Daily Stories, appeared to show Officer Kyle Newman thanking the public for their support after being shot in the neck. Police confirmed the video was AI-generated and reported it to Facebook. Officer Newman was critically injured after being shot during an incident where he was investigating a driver for driving while intoxicated. The driver shot Newman as the officer tried to detain him. The driver then led officers on a chase before crashing and dying in an officer-involved shooting.
