A police department issued a warning after a deepfake video surfaced online. The video depicted a police officer recovering from injuries sustained in a recent shooting. The department is asking the public not to share the video.

What happened

On May 19, a Facebook page posted a short AI-generated video depicting a likeness of Officer Kyle Newman. In the video, the fake Newman thanks the public for their support. The Fort Smith Police Department believes the video's creators used Newman's department-issued photo to create the deepfake. The department contacted the page's administrator and reported the post, but it remains available. The department is asking residents not to share or engage with the video, as it is harmful to Officer Newman’s family, friends, colleagues, and co-workers.
