Oscar-winning actors Michael Caine and Matthew McConaughey have partnered with voice-cloning company ElevenLabs to allow its AI to replicate their voices. ElevenLabs faced scrutiny after its technology was misused.
What happened
In January 2023, ElevenLabs noted increasing misuse of its voice cloning tech. A year later, in January 2024, its software was used to mimic then-President Joe Biden's voice in a robocall message sent to thousands of New Hampshire voters. ElevenLabs now says it has additional measures to block the cloning of celebrity and other high-profile voices without their consent.
