British MP Jess Asato has initiated legal action against xAI, the artificial intelligence company owned by Elon Musk, following the emergence of non-consensual sexualized deepfakes depicting her. The lawsuit seeks to compel the company to implement safeguards preventing the Grok chatbot from generating such content.
What happened
Following public criticism of Elon Musk and the Grok AI platform, fake images and videos of Jess Asato began circulating online, including content that depicted scenes of sexualized violence. Asato alleges that the specific development and training processes of the Grok AI enabled it to generate these unauthorized sexualized images.
In her lawsuit, the lawmaker claims the incident constitutes a misuse of private information and a violation of data protection laws. She is seeking a court order to force xAI to adopt technical measures that would ensure the chatbot cannot create additional fake imagery of her. Attorneys representing the politician believe this case may establish a significant legal precedent for how AI developers are held accountable for the output of their generative models.
