In August 2026, original Pokémon theme song singer Jason Paige sparked controversy by promoting a new Game Boy-style game titled The Game Is Here. The project, priced at $151 per unit and limited to 300 copies, drew significant backlash due to its marketing materials and the inclusion of AI-generated content.

What happened

The marketing campaign for the game featured advertisements that were explicitly confirmed by Paige to be AI-generated. The promotional material and accompanying limited-edition trading cards utilized generative AI, which drew criticism from the retro gaming community and observers who labeled the marketing as low-quality "AI slop."

While the marketing utilized synthetic media, the game itself was developed by Ultra Dolphin Revolution, a licensed developer contracted by Paige's management two years prior. The developer confirmed that the game was hand-coded without the use of generative AI and contained original assets, homages to Paige’s career, and references to previous titles. The developers stated they were hired for a flat fee and had no involvement in the pricing or the AI-driven marketing strategy. This incident follows previous controversies involving Paige regarding the valuation of autographed trading cards and his increased use of generative AI in recent music videos.
