On September 19, 2026, social media users began circulating an AI-generated image that falsely depicted the capital of Pakistan under a severe lockdown. The image, shared by a self-identified activist for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, claimed to show shipping containers blocking a motorway in Islamabad ahead of planned political protests.

What happened

The image was shared on platforms including Facebook, TikTok, and X, accompanied by captions mocking the city's lockdown status. While authorities in Islamabad had indeed implemented security measures—including the use of shipping containers and the deployment of 22,000 security personnel—to restrict access ahead of a march supporting imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan, the viral image was a fabrication.

Closer inspection of the image revealed multiple visual errors characteristic of AI-generated media. These included misspelled text on police vehicles, warped limbs on depicted officers, inconsistent road markings, and a road sign that appeared unanchored to the ground. Furthermore, an analysis using OpenAI's verification tool confirmed the presence of invisible SynthID watermarks, indicating the image was created using the company's AI tools. The circulation of this synthetic media occurred during a period of heightened political tension, as the PTI party prepared for demonstrations following the detention of several of Khan's family members and the obstruction of key transport routes into the capital.
