The incident occurred amidst heightened political sensitivity regarding the use of the South Korean flag, known as the Taegeukgi, ahead of the nation's Independence Day celebrations.
What happened
The controversy began after the Incheon city government removed a street banner that critics claimed displayed the national flag incorrectly. Capitalizing on this tension, multiple social media accounts on platforms including Instagram, Threads, YouTube, and X shared an image purporting to show a fireworks display at the Songdo Beach Festival where the flag's colors and trigrams were inverted. The posts accused officials of intentional disrespect, with some users labeling the government as communist sympathizers.
Investigations confirmed that the image was a fabrication. The original post, shared by an Instagram account with the handle "issuemag_," included an AI label and a caption stating it was generated to help readers' understanding. Furthermore, a detection tool from Hive Moderation flagged the image as likely synthetic. A spokesperson for the Yeonsu district, which organized the Songdo Beach Festival, clarified that the fireworks were intended to show spinning, ball-shaped bursts rather than any national symbols. The district provided official video footage of the four-and-a-half-minute show, which confirmed that the firework display depicted in the AI-generated image never occurred.
