In late June 2026, a series of AI-generated videos circulating on social media ignited significant public outrage and protests across Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The content, which depicted religious figures in controversial contexts, prompted immediate intervention from local law enforcement and right-wing organizations.
What happened
The controversy centered on a Facebook page titled "From Heaven to Earth," which uploaded over 50 videos utilizing artificial intelligence and deepfake technologies. The videos claimed that Jesus Christ was the "father" of Hindu deities such as Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Additional clips featured Lord Ram receiving sermons from Jesus and asserted that Jesus held greater power than Lord Hanuman. Representatives from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, and Dharmasena organized large-scale protests, alleging that the content intentionally demeaned Hindu deities by portraying them as cartoon-like characters to offend religious sentiments.
In response to a formal complaint filed by Dharmasena, the Raipur Civil Lines Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified individuals under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for intentionally hurting religious sentiments. ACP Ramakant Sahu confirmed that the videos were AI-generated and noted that the investigation aims to determine the origin of the uploads, acknowledging that they could have been posted from anywhere in the country. Cyber crime experts have emphasized the need for specialized AI forensic software to track the digital footprints of the creators involved in manufacturing this content. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to identify the perpetrators responsible for the viral material.
