An 80-year-old woman was defrauded of £140,000 after falling victim to a sophisticated romance scam orchestrated by individuals she met on Facebook. The victim, whose daughter Helen eventually intervened, was manipulated into sending large sums of money, including cash hidden in a book, under the guise of medical emergencies and ransom demands. The scammers maintained the deception through persistent communication and the use of synthetic media to build a false sense of intimacy.

What happened

The scammers employed artificial intelligence to generate deepfake photos and video calls, allowing them to impersonate a romantic interest and maintain the victim's trust. Helen, the victim's daughter, became suspicious after noticing her mother’s secretive behavior and frequent, unexplained video calls. When Helen finally confronted the scammer on a video call, she identified the deception by observing that the image was fuzzy and the voice was out of sync with the speaker's movements. Despite this evidence, the victim remained convinced of the relationship's authenticity, feeling ashamed and defensive when challenged. The scammers proved persistent, continuing to contact the victim even after her phone number was changed multiple times. Ultimately, Helen utilized her lasting power of attorney to implement bank safeguards, and the bank was able to recover £45,000 of the stolen funds. To prevent further contact, Helen eventually replaced her mother's smartphone with a device limited to basic calls and texts, following expert advice to reset the victim's digital footprint.
