Instagram is introducing new enforcement measures to reduce the reach of accounts featuring AI-generated people that fail to properly label themselves. This policy shift follows user complaints regarding profiles that appear human but are entirely synthetic, a trend that Instagram acknowledges was identified by its community rather than anticipated by internal systems.

What happened

The platform is renaming its “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile” to clarify that the person featured was built using artificial intelligence. While creators who use the label face no penalties, those who fail to disclose their use of synthetic subjects will see their reach reduced. This policy does not apply to general AI-assisted editing, such as sharpening captions or generating graphics, as the company aims to distinguish between synthetic people and creative image adjustments.

The push for this policy was accelerated by incidents involving deceptive influencer marketing. A notable case involved the dating app Goose, where a Wired investigation identified over two dozen accounts featuring AI-generated influencers that were used to drive app signups, sometimes by contacting users directly via direct messages. Similarly, investigations have uncovered hundreds of AI-generated doctors and wellness personalities across social media platforms promoting health claims and supplements. Despite these developments, Instagram has not yet detailed the specific detection systems it will use to identify unlabeled AI profiles, leaving questions about how effectively the platform will monitor the accounts moving forward.
