An AI-generated website purporting to be a historical archive of tabletop game designers has sparked controversy within the RPG community. The site, called 4 Pillar Games, features AI-generated biographies and images of designers, but has been criticized for numerous inaccuracies and for using likenesses without permission.

What happened

The 4 Pillar Games website launched with an archive of "Influential Tabletop Game Icons," "Top TTG Companies," and "Top TTG Magazines." Designers such as Fred Hicks, Cam Banks, and Spencer Campbell have publicly objected to their inclusion, citing inaccurate information and unauthorized use of their images. Gaming historian Shannon Appelcline noted errors in the site's histories of the project owner's own companies. The site's content appears to be generated using scraped data and large language models, leading to concerns about the spread of misinformation within the tabletop gaming community. Following the backlash, at least two people listed on the site's "about" page resigned from the project, and portions of the site were removed.
