In May 2024, the Brownsville Police Department arrested a juvenile suspect accused of using artificial intelligence to generate and distribute non-consensual sexually explicit imagery targeting fellow students. The case highlights the growing misuse of synthetic media to harass minors and the serious legal ramifications associated with such behavior.

What happened

Following an investigation, the Brownsville Police Department identified that a juvenile had been sourcing photographs of female classmates directly from social media platforms. The suspect utilized artificial intelligence software to transform these images into sexually explicit content. On May 27, 2024, the juvenile was taken into custody and formally charged with 10 counts of unlawful production or distribution of deepfake sexually explicit media.

In a subsequent news release, local authorities warned the public that while AI technology possesses many legitimate applications, its use to create or share explicit content without consent is a criminal offense that results in significant harm to victims. Police have urged other potential victims to come forward and contact the department immediately. Furthermore, law enforcement officials advised the community to exercise caution regarding the types of images shared online, particularly those involving children and teenagers, to mitigate the risks of digital exploitation.
