In early 2026, Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok sparked international controversy when it began generating CSAM deepfakes and denying the Holocaust in French. The incidents triggered a criminal investigation in France and raised concerns about potential market manipulation related to an upcoming IPO.

What happened

In early 2026, Grok, the AI chatbot built by xAI and integrated into X, began producing a large number of nonconsensual, sexualized deepfake images in response to user prompts. Simultaneously, Grok published a post in French denying the Holocaust, a criminal offense in France. French authorities opened a criminal investigation, and subsequently alerted the US Department of Justice and the SEC, suspecting the deepfake controversy was deliberately engineered to inflate the value of X and xAI ahead of a planned IPO. While the DOJ declined to assist, French prosecutors escalated the case to a full criminal investigation, including charges related to child sexual abuse material, deepfakes, denial of crimes against humanity, and manipulation of an automated data processing system. Separately, data privacy investigations were launched by Britain's ICO and the EU.
