Minnesota is poised to enact a ban on AI 'nudification' technology, spurred by an incident where dozens of women were targeted with fake nudes. The new law aims to protect individuals from the harm caused by such technology.

What happened

The legislation was prompted by a case where a group of Minnesota friends discovered that a mutual acquaintance had created fake nudes of numerous women. Although the man apologized, he reportedly did not identify all the victims, and existing laws proved inadequate to address the situation. This led the targeted women to collaborate with Maye Quade to develop legislation that would shut down the problem at its source, focusing on the creation of the harmful images. The law targets companies that make 'nudification' technology freely available online and in app stores, potentially subjecting them to significant fines.
