What happened
The incident involved the dissemination of an AI-synthesized image that suggested a potential run for a third presidential term. Trump had previously shared the same image on the preceding Saturday. An hour after the "Just kidding!" post, he shared an additional "TRUMP 2028" image without any accompanying disclaimer. These posts follow a pattern of references to a third term, including verbal remarks made at a Michigan event where he suggested the possibility of a different president in two and a half years. A third term would conflict with the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, which limits a president to two elected terms. Legal experts, such as Anoo D. Vyas from the University of Massachusetts School of Law, have noted that such content, even when presented as a joke, may serve to test public reception toward legally dubious theories regarding term limits.
