Following false rumors regarding the death of country music legend Dolly Parton, multiple AI-generated images of the singer appearing hospitalized have surfaced on YouTube. These doctored thumbnails, which depict Parton in patient attire or superimposed within news-style backgrounds, were actively promoted by the platform's recommendation algorithms.

What happened

On the morning of August 27, 2024, Mashable identified at least three YouTube videos featuring fake, likely AI-generated images of Parton in a hospital setting. These videos were surfaced by the platform in sections labeled "Videos on the rise" and "YouTube featured," which are either algorithmically driven or manually curated by the service. One specific thumbnail depicted the icon in a hospital gown surrounded by medical tubes against a city backdrop, while another featured singer Jelly Roll with a superimposed image of Parton appearing in the clouds.

While three of the identified videos displayed a "Made with AI" label and included disclaimers acknowledging that the visuals were altered or fully generated, a related video concerning her sister, Stella Parton, lacked these disclosures. The videos gained further traction through the "hyped" label, a feature where viewers boost content discoverability. As of the afternoon of August 27, all four videos remained live on the platform. In response to inquiries, a YouTube spokesperson stated that the company is reviewing the content and will take action against channels found to be in violation of its policies.
