A viral video circulating on social media falsely claimed to show Indian Army Chief Dhiraj Seth dancing with the wife of an Army Major. The 23-second clip, which purported to be a CNN news report, was shared across platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and X, leading many users to believe the fabricated content was genuine.
What happened
The attack utilized AI-manipulation techniques to create a deceptive narrative targeting a senior military official. The video featured a man in a suit dancing with a woman, overlaid with a fake CNN headline to lend the content an air of institutional legitimacy. However, the video lacked standard journalistic markers, such as a byline or publication date, and a search of the official CNN website confirmed the broadcaster never published the clip.
Technical analysis revealed several indicators of synthetic generation. The video exhibited unnatural hand movements, facial distortions, and static backgrounds where individuals appeared frozen. Additionally, the liquid in the glasses held by the dancers failed to move or splash naturally. Meta’s AI detection tools identified digital signatures confirming the use of generative AI tools.
Investigations into the source imagery found that the footage was a composite of unrelated clips. A reverse image search traced the dancing footage to an Instagram video from March 2026, while a still image included in the fabrication was identified as a photo of an armed forces veteran and his wife, unrelated to the Army Chief. The Indian Army’s official fact-checking account on X formally debunked the footage, clarifying that it featured edited imagery of General Dhiraj Seth. The incident occurred amidst ongoing regional tensions, highlighting the use of synthetic media to fuel misinformation campaigns between Indian and Pakistani social media users.
