A new documentary and a 14-part TikTok series hosted by Paris Hilton have identified David Do, a 36-year-old pharmacist from Markham, as the alleged mastermind behind a global deepfake pornography empire. The investigation highlights the severe personal toll of AI-generated abuse and the lack of comprehensive legal protections for victims in Canada.
What happened
David Do allegedly operated a website known as Mr. Deepfakes for seven years before it was shuttered in 2025. The platform allowed users to generate nonconsensual explicit content using images of celebrities, acquaintances, and family members harvested from the internet. At its peak, the site reportedly attracted 17 million monthly users and hosted nearly 70,000 videos that were viewed more than two billion times by 650,000 unique users.
Journalist Laurie Segall, who led the probe into the site, utilized ethical hackers to trace the operation back to Do. The platform featured discussion boards where users debated and encouraged the creation of deepfakes of people they knew personally. Following the investigation, Do was confronted by Segall while entering a hospital, where he declined to answer questions regarding his involvement.
While Do faces no criminal charges due to the current absence of specific laws against deepfake creation in Canada, he is facing professional consequences. His employer, Oak Valley Health, placed him on leave pending an investigation, and he is also under review by the Ontario College of Pharmacists. Meanwhile, victims like Paris Hilton, who had over 100,000 explicit deepfakes of herself circulated online, are actively advocating for legislative changes such as the DEFIANCE Act to address the harm caused by AI-generated sexual content.
