A 20-year-old hotel management student in Hyderabad died by suicide in his rented room after college staff refused to return his mobile phone for over a week. The device had been confiscated following allegations that the student used artificial intelligence to create a morphed image of a lecturer.

What happened

The incident began when a lecturer at the student's college accused him of creating an inappropriate, morphed image of them using AI technology. Following this allegation, the lecturer seized the student's mobile phone and handed the device over to the college principal. Although the student reportedly apologized for the incident, the college administration refused to return the phone for a week. According to a police official citing a formal complaint, the student felt deeply insulted and upset by the situation. The student subsequently died by suicide in his rented room. Following the tragedy, police registered a case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for abetment of suicide. Both the college principal and the lecturer involved were arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
