Brown Brothers Media operated a network of news sites that utilized AI-generated headshots and fabricated journalist profiles to generate massive traffic through SEO-optimized content. The operation, which acquired struggling news outlets to transform them into content mills, was eventually forced to halt publication following an investigation into its deceptive practices.
What happened
Brown Brothers Media achieved tens of millions of page views per month by inventing fake journalists and subject matter experts. These fabricated personas were outfitted with fraudulent credentials and personal histories to lend credibility to thousands of articles. Much of the content produced by the network was plagiarized from legitimate reporting, based on entirely fictional personal experiences, or deemed too low-quality to provide value to readers.
The operation relied heavily on Google to source its audience. Following an investigation into these practices, Google moved to suppress the Brown Brothers sites from its Search and Google News platforms. Shortly after this intervention, the company ceased operations. In response to this and similar schemes, Google updated its official guidelines to explicitly forbid the use of deceptive authorship information. The new policy clarifies that fabricating creator profiles—including the use of AI-generated headshots, made-up names, or false credentials—is considered a form of deception that signals a low-quality page to the search engine's automated systems.
