A disturbing trend is emerging: AI-generated deepfake pornography is becoming increasingly widespread among teenagers. A recent survey highlights the ease with which technology can be misused to create realistic fake explicit content using simple photos, often sourced from social media.
What happened
The survey found that a significant number of young people, ages 13 to 20, personally know someone who has been targeted by fake explicit images created with AI. Even more concerning, some report being victims themselves. The issue is not limited to external threats; teens are also using these tools to generate fake images of classmates. In response, Florida passed "Brooke’s Law," named after Brooke Curry, a victim of a deepfake image. This law mandates websites to remove reported deepfake content within 48 hours of a victim’s request. Several lawsuits and investigations are underway, targeting AI platforms accused of enabling the creation and spread of child sexual abuse material and deepfakes.
