The Nigerian Presidency has issued a warning about the increasing use of deepfakes and manipulated content aimed at exploiting religious sentiments for political purposes. The warning comes as political activities intensify ahead of future elections.

What happened

The Office of Digital Engagement and Strategy identified deliberate attempts to mislead Nigerians using deepfake videos and false narratives. A manipulated video surfaced featuring altered audio and false attributions designed to portray President Bola Ahmed Tinubu negatively. Shortly after, a fabricated video linked to a religious leader allegedly intended to incite Muslim communities against the President. The Presidency believes this is a coordinated effort to inflame religious tensions and sow division. The Presidency warned that individuals involved in creating and spreading false information would be held accountable under Nigerian laws. They urged citizens to verify information through credible sources.
