A political campaign video featuring AI-generated testimonials from Black residents has sparked accusations of racial exploitation and political deception in Fort Bend County. The video, which was shared on Facebook by the campaign of Republican County Judge Daniel Wong and the Fort Bend County Republican Party, featured individuals praising Wong for providing jobs, food, and utility assistance. The content was intended to demonstrate support for Wong ahead of the November 3 election, but it quickly drew scrutiny for its artificial nature.
What happened
Social media users identified the video as AI-generated after noticing visual anomalies, including distorted backgrounds, warped clothing, and unnaturally similar voices among the featured individuals. The video was subsequently removed from the campaign's platforms. Allegations emerged that the likenesses of actual Black campaign workers were used without their knowledge or permission, with one woman reportedly stating that her face was used to deliver words she never spoke. Democratic challenger Dexter McCoy condemned the video as racist and exploitative, arguing that the campaign manufactured support through deception.
In response, the Wong campaign denied producing the video, claiming it was created by an outside supporter who identifies as a Democrat. Communications director Bobby Eberle acknowledged the video was AI-generated but maintained that the creator claimed to have obtained consent from the individuals depicted. This account directly conflicts with reports from those featured who claim they did not authorize the use of their images or the statements attributed to them. Beyond the issues of consent and AI usage, the video faced criticism for its messaging, which some community members argued reinforced harmful stereotypes about Black voters' dependence on political figures for basic needs. The incident has raised significant questions regarding the ethics of AI in political campaigning and the potential violation of laws governing deceptive political content.
