A crisis is unfolding in schools as AI-driven 'nudifying' apps facilitate the creation and dissemination of deepfake nude images of students. These images, created without consent, are spreading rapidly through group chats and school networks.
What happened
In February 2024, administrators at Beverly Vista Middle School discovered that students had used AI tools to create fake nude images of their classmates. Real students' faces were grafted onto AI-generated nude bodies, and the resulting images were shared among peers. Sixteen eighth-grade students were identified as victims. These apps are readily available in app stores, and investigations show that app store safeguards often fail to prevent access to tools capable of generating child sexual abuse material.
