In late August 2024, former President Donald Trump utilized his Truth Social platform to share AI-generated imagery depicting the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago in a state of decay. The post presented a fabricated vision of the facility, which is scheduled to open in June 2025, as a location marred by massive amounts of trash and homeless encampments.

What happened

The incident involved the distribution of synthetic imagery intended to disparage the $850 million project currently under construction on Chicago’s South Side. In one specific instance, Trump shared an AI-generated image showing the monument with a large trash bag draped over its roof, accompanied by the caption, "The Barack Hussein Obama Library, in 10 years, when fully matured!" This followed a separate post from the previous week where he shared a different fabricated image depicting the center as a large trash can located in a parking lot. These actions represent a continuation of Trump's public criticism regarding the project, which he has previously described as an unattractive building that is both behind schedule and over budget.
