In August 2026, social media users began sharing AI-generated videos falsely claiming that authorities had recovered caches of weapons from a university dormitory and a religious school in Bangladesh. These fabricated clips, which circulated on Facebook and Instagram, targeted the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and exploited existing public anxieties regarding ongoing political instability.

What happened

The disinformation campaign utilized synthetic media to manufacture scenes of police and military activity that never occurred. One 29-second video, viewed over 17,000 times, claimed to show police recovering weapons from a room belonging to a Chhatra Dal secretary at Barishal University. A second video, shared on August 5, purported to show a massive seizure of firearms from a madrassa kitchen in Noakhali.

Analysis by AFP and verification through Google’s SynthID tool confirmed the content was AI-generated, identifying invisible watermarks associated with Google's AI models. The videos contained visual inconsistencies typical of synthetic media, including distorted text on uniforms, missing nametags, identical numbering on crime scene markers, and non-existent military badges. Local police officials in both Barishal and Noakhali confirmed that the alleged raids were completely baseless, noting that no such operations had taken place at the specified locations. Despite these official denials and subsequent debunks by fact-checking organizations like Boom and FactWatch, the videos successfully misled social media users, fueling inflammatory commentary and heightening concerns about political violence in the region.
