On July 11, 2024, a 12-year-old student named Ayush Singh was found dead in his home in Patna, Bihar, following a campaign of psychological coercion and digital extortion. Investigations revealed that the minor had been targeted by a cyber-fraud syndicate that used AI-generated imagery to manipulate him.

What happened

The perpetrator, identified as Sunil Sau of Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, utilized a false profile picture of a young woman to establish contact with the victim. Using generative artificial intelligence software, the accused created explicit nude deepfakes from the child’s photographs. The attacker threatened to circulate this fabricated media among the boy's school peers and social contacts, coercing the victim into making two electronic fund transfers totaling ₹2,500. As the extortion demands escalated while the child was home alone, the resulting psychological distress led to his death.

Patna Police conducted a multi-state operation and apprehended the suspect on August 14. Forensic analysis of the suspect's mobile devices uncovered deepfake generation tools, extortion logs, and records of systematic financial crimes. Investigators found evidence suggesting the suspect was part of an organized cyber fraud ring, with financial documents linking him to a ₹50 Lakh land purchase suspected to be funded by extortion proceeds. While authorities currently classify the incident as a cyber-fraud-induced suicide, the victim's family has raised allegations of physical harm, prompting further investigation by senior police administration. The case has highlighted the severe risks posed to minors by the proliferation of AI deepfake tools and the urgent need for enhanced digital safety monitoring.
