On July 2, 2026, a video circulated across X and Instagram falsely claiming to depict the funeral procession of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Despite the video gaining hundreds of thousands of views across multiple accounts, investigations confirmed the footage was entirely AI-generated.
What happened
The dissemination began when a pro-Iranian X account posted the clip with a caption framing the funeral as an uprising, garnering over 741,000 views. Other users subsequently shared the video, further amplifying the false narrative. A formal fact-check was initiated to address the viral claim, which contradicted the official schedule for the state funeral set to take place between July 4 and July 9, 2026.
Frame-by-frame analysis revealed several visual inconsistencies characteristic of synthetic media. Between the 0:00 and 0:06-second marks, the crowd moved in a fluid, wave-like pattern inconsistent with natural human behavior. Furthermore, at the 0:12 and 0:15-second marks, red flags appeared abruptly within the crowd without any logical transition or source. The video concluded with text promoting an upcoming event, suggesting the footage was intended as promotional material rather than a record of an actual historical event.
Multiple AI detection tools confirmed the artificial nature of the clip: UncovAI flagged the video as 99% AI-generated, TruthScan indicated a 71% probability, and AI Aware identified it as 68% synthetic. A comprehensive search of credible international and Iranian media outlets yielded no reports matching the viral footage, confirming that the video was a fabrication.
