In August 2026, social media platforms including Facebook and TikTok became vectors for a disinformation campaign featuring an AI-generated recording of Myanmar’s deposed leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. The clip falsely portrayed the former leader as criticizing the People’s Defense Forces (PDF), an armed group opposing the military junta, causing confusion regarding her stance on the ongoing civil war.

What happened

The 20-second video clip utilized images of Suu Kyi released by the military junta, including footage from a recent meeting with a Red Cross official in Naypyidaw. These visuals were paired with a synthesized voiceover that claimed she did not accept the PDF's actions, labeling their armed resistance as "wrong" and contrary to democratic principles.

Analysts and political figures quickly identified the audio as a fabrication. Nay Phone Latt, a spokesperson for the National Unity Government in exile, confirmed the recording was not Suu Kyi's voice and characterized the effort as psychological warfare intended to sow division among anti-junta forces. Technical analysis supported these claims: Hive Moderation flagged the content with a 99.4 percent likelihood of being AI-generated, and Hiya AI audio analysis also identified the clip as a deepfake. Observers noted that the synthesized voice exhibited unnatural slurring and a monotonous tone, which differed significantly from the varying cadence and natural delivery found in authentic recordings of Suu Kyi from 2020. Despite the clear indicators of manipulation, the post garnered comments from users who believed the message was genuine, illustrating the effectiveness of AI-driven disinformation in volatile political environments.
