Canadian musician Ashley MacIsaac has launched a lawsuit against Google, alleging defamation after Google's AI Overview wrongly claimed he was a sex offender. The lawsuit seeks $1.5 million in damages.

What happened

Google's AI Overview feature falsely stated that MacIsaac had been convicted of multiple criminal offenses, including sexual assault and internet luring of a child. It also wrongly stated that MacIsaac was listed on the national sex offender registry. The misinformation led to the cancellation of a concert appearance after public complaints. MacIsaac's lawsuit claims that Google is liable for the AI Overview's defective design and for failing to correct the false statements. The AI Overview now includes a statement about MacIsaac's legal action against Google.
