Russian Telegram channels have launched a disinformation campaign utilizing AI-generated imagery to falsely claim that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are forcibly drafting women into military service. Ukrainian officials have identified these efforts as an attempt to sow panic and undermine voluntary recruitment efforts as the conflict continues.

What happened

The campaign centers on AI-generated images shared across various Russian Telegram channels. One prominent example featured a woman holding an assault rifle and a baby, accompanied by the caption, "a real Ukrainian woman does these things in 40 seconds." Russian accounts falsely claimed this image originated from a recruitment advertisement displayed in a Kyiv shopping mall. Other circulated materials included images of women in military uniforms with the slogan, "now it’s your turn, show your superpower," as well as forged draft notices purportedly sent to women in Kyiv and Kharkiv.

Ukrainian fact-checkers analyzed the primary image and found significant evidence of synthetic manipulation, with Hive Moderation estimating a 99% likelihood that the content was AI-generated. The Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation has officially refuted these claims, stating that women are not subject to compulsory mobilization and that no such plans exist. The agency characterized the campaign as an "informational provocation" designed to create a false sense of the inevitability of forced mobilization. By systematically producing and spreading these AI-generated fakes, the network aims to destabilize the situation in Ukraine and discredit the voluntary enlistment process for the country's Defense Forces.
