What happened
The attack occurred during a virtual meeting where the employee was deceived by participants using deepfake technology. According to Rachel Hui, Superintendent of the Cyber Security Division at the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau, the fraudsters utilized this virtual platform to impersonate individuals, successfully tricking the employee into the unauthorized transfer of funds. Beyond this specific incident, authorities have observed fraudsters increasingly using deepfakes to impersonate identities for illicit activities, including unauthorized bank account openings and fraudulent loan applications. The Hong Kong Police Force is currently responding to these emerging threats by deploying AI to analyze cyber intelligence and fraud data, utilizing initiatives like Project RAPID to proactively identify and mitigate phishing scams and fake websites.
