During the fifth day of testimony in the murder trial of Caleb Flynn, prosecutors introduced evidence of AI-generated audio files discovered on the defendant's mobile device. Flynn, a former pastor and American Idol contestant, is accused of murdering his wife, Ashley, in their Tipp City, Ohio home.

What happened

Special agent Joseph Wilhelm of the Ohio BCI testified regarding data extracted from 12 devices seized during the investigation, including Flynn's iPhone. Wilhelm noted that several applications, including an AI music song generator, had been uninstalled from the device in the days leading up to the victim's death. Upon further analysis, investigators recovered audio files that appeared to be AI-generated and were explicitly related to Flynn's relationship with his mistress, Alleigha Botner.

During her testimony, Botner walked the court through the lyrics of these AI-generated songs, explaining the specific meanings behind various lines. She testified that references to "early mornings" described the times they met while Flynn was supposedly at the gym, while "late nights" referred to periods when the victim was at camp. Botner also clarified that lyrics regarding the "third of every month" commemorated their anniversary, marking when they began texting more frequently in March 2024, and that lines about "whispered about numbers and years in between" pertained to the age difference between the two. The presentation of these digital artifacts occurred alongside the reading of over 100,000 text messages exchanged between Flynn and Botner, which included discussions regarding the victim.
