In August 2026, Spanish police arrested a man in Murcia for allegedly utilizing deepfake technology to deceive a digital certificate provider during remote identity verification checks. The suspect attempted to secure fraudulent digital signatures by manipulating his appearance to match forged national identity cards presented during video calls.

What happened

The suspect targeted more than 30 citizens, making 38 attempts to bypass security protocols. During the video verification process, he used AI software to alter his face in real-time to match the photo on the counterfeit ID documents. To further the deception, the fraudster used household spotlights with colored bulbs to simulate the appearance of authentic holograms and security features on the forged cards. He also employed VPNs to anonymize his network activity.

The scheme was uncovered after the certificate provider flagged a series of suspicious verification requests. The perpetrator was ultimately caught when his digital mask glitched during a live call, briefly revealing his true face. Following the incident, investigators traced the suspect through his communication and payment trails, identifying over 320 phone lines linked to 24 mobile devices, many of which were registered using stolen identities. Upon his arrest, police seized an encrypted laptop, various phones, storage devices, and records. The suspect now faces charges related to the continuing falsification of official documents.
