Following the imprisonment of Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara, a six-day protest march from Kandy to Colombo was organized to demand his release. During this event, a viral image circulated on social media platforms, including Facebook and X, claiming to show a massive crowd of monks and laypeople participating in the march near Pilimatalawa.

What happened

The viral image was an AI-generated fabrication designed to exaggerate the scale of the protest. While the background of the image—including a specific billboard, a shop with a green roof, and various vehicles—matched real-world footage of the march, the crowd depicted in the photo was artificially enlarged. Real video footage from the same location showed only a small group of participants, contradicting the viral claim.

Technical analysis revealed several inconsistencies characteristic of AI generation, such as vehicles traveling in both directions within the same lane, distorted wheels on three-wheelers, and an incorrect number of road lanes for the Colombo-Kandy route. An AI-generated image detection tool confirmed that the photo was not a genuine capture of the event. The image was created by taking a real, smaller-scale photo of the march and using artificial intelligence to populate the scene with a large, fabricated crowd to create a false impression of public support.
