A woman was targeted by a romance scammer who utilized deepfake video technology to impersonate a romantic interest. The victim's daughter, Helen, became aware of the situation and attempted to intervene after realizing her mother was being manipulated. Helen eventually convinced her mother to allow her to speak with the scammer on a video call, during which she immediately identified the footage as a deepfake due to the image being fuzzy and the audio being out of sync with the speaker's movements.

What happened

The scammer employed a combination of social engineering and synthetic media to maintain the ruse. Despite Helen pointing out the technical inconsistencies and the fraudulent nature of the interaction, her mother remained resistant, feeling ashamed and insisting that Helen was interfering with a genuine relationship. The emotional manipulation was significant, with the mother viewing the intervention as an attempt to destroy her happiness.

Unable to persuade her mother to cut ties, Helen utilized her lasting power of attorney to contact the bank and implement safeguards on her mother's accounts. The bank was able to identify the hallmarks of fraud and successfully returned £45,000 to the victim's account. To further protect her mother, Helen changed her phone number multiple times and eventually replaced her smartphone with a device restricted to calls and texts to limit the scammer's ability to reach her. Experts suggest that in such cases, resetting a victim's digital footprint—including email addresses and social media accounts—is a critical step in preventing further exploitation.
