In September 2026, an individual in the Ards and North Down area was defrauded of £250,000 after interacting with an AI-generated video featuring a well-known financial sector personality. The incident, described by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) as a sophisticated and substantial fraud, highlights the increasing use of synthetic media to facilitate high-value financial crimes.
What happened
The victim initially encountered an advertisement promoting an investment opportunity with claims of significant returns, featuring an apparent celebrity endorsement. After investing a small initial sum, the victim was contacted via WhatsApp and prompted to increase their financial commitment. The fraudsters employed a multi-layered social engineering strategy: they persuaded the victim to create multiple online accounts and gained remote access to the victim's computer under the guise of providing investment assistance.
As the scam progressed, the perpetrators leveraged the initial trust established by the AI-generated video to encourage the victim to borrow additional funds. These monies were subsequently transferred into accounts under the control of the criminals. The PSNI noted that the attackers utilized a combination of convincing advertisements, fabricated videos, and voice synthesis to maintain the illusion of legitimacy throughout the process. Authorities have since warned that celebrity endorsements should never be treated as verification of an investment's authenticity and urge the public to independently verify financial service providers through the Financial Conduct Authority.
