What happened

In a sophisticated corporate fraud case in Hong Kong, scammers successfully deceived an employee by utilizing deepfake technology to simulate a high-stakes video conference. According to information disclosed by the Hong Kong Government in June 2024, the perpetrators leveraged publicly available videos and voice recordings to produce pre-recorded meetings. These recordings were carefully crafted to impersonate company managers, creating a false sense of authority and collective consensus.

During the incident, the victim did not engage in any actual dialogue or real-time interaction with the characters appearing in the video. Instead, the scammers presented the pre-recorded footage to make the payment request appear as though it had been collectively confirmed by familiar executives. Following the conclusion of the meeting, the attackers continued to pressure the employee to execute the transaction through instant messaging channels. The operation resulted in a significant financial loss of approximately 200 million Hong Kong dollars.
