In June 2026, a UK resident fell victim to a financial scam involving an AI-generated video. The victim encountered an investment platform endorsed by an AI-simulated version of a prominent UK finance figure, leading them to transfer money and provide personal details without consulting family members.
What happened
The scam utilized an AI-generated endorsement to create a false sense of legitimacy for an investment platform. The victim was persuaded by the content to believe they had successfully doubled their money and could withdraw funds at any time. Because the victim was excited by the perceived returns, they initially failed to recognize the situation as fraudulent. The incident was only discovered when the victim's child called two hours after the initial message, by which time the funds had already been transferred. The victim subsequently contacted their bank to mitigate losses. Following the incident, family members held an in-depth discussion to review red flags, such as the existence of AI-generated videos, the pressure to act quickly, and the promise of guaranteed returns that seem too good to be true.
