In July 2026, a series of AI-generated images and false narratives were circulated on X to undermine the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest and activist Sonam Wangchuk. These posts, shared by verified accounts, utilized synthetic media to fabricate police statements, suggest criminal behavior, and manufacture testimonials regarding the protests surrounding entrance exam leak allegations.

What happened

The disinformation campaign centered on three primary claims identified by fact-checkers. First, posts attributed a statement to a non-existent police inspector named Shivani Chaudhary, claiming Wangchuk requested police help for medical attention. AI detection tools Hive Moderation and TruthScan determined the photo of the alleged officer was AI-generated with over 97 percent confidence. Official statements from the DCP of New Delhi confirmed police action was taken based on a High Court order, contradicting the fabricated narrative.

Second, claims were made regarding the conduct of CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke. An account shared an image of an elderly man speaking to a reporter alongside allegations of alcohol found in a flat. Analysis confirmed the image of the man was AI-generated. This stood in contrast to verified reports and interviews confirming Dipke was at his residence during the police arrival on July 18.

Finally, the campaign circulated images of a crying man, identifying him as a Brahmin student who allegedly witnessed anti-Hindu sentiment at the protest site. Reverse image searches failed to find credible sources, and AI detection tools flagged the images as synthetic with over 99 percent confidence. Further investigation revealed a video from June 8 featuring a person resembling the subject of the AI images, who identified himself as Kapil and expressed personal grievances regarding the protest, proving the viral narrative was a fabrication built upon manipulated imagery.
