An AI-manipulated photograph featuring Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and AISA National President Neha Bora has been widely circulated across social media platforms. The image, which prompted verification queries to fact-checking services, falsely suggests a meeting between the two individuals.

What happened

The viral image was created by editing an original photograph that actually depicted Neha Bora with YouTuber Dhruv Rathee. The original photo was first shared on Instagram on 14 October as a collaboration between Bora and Rathee and was subsequently featured in a Times of India report regarding their interaction. While Shashi Tharoor and Neha Bora have met in the past, with Tharoor sharing authentic photos of their encounters, the specific image circulating online is a fabrication.

To confirm the manipulation, investigators utilized multiple detection tools. AI-generated content detectors, specifically Hive Moderation and Sightengine, indicated high confidence that the image was created or altered using artificial intelligence. Furthermore, Google's SynthID detector identified that the image had been generated or edited using OpenAI's generative AI tools. The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of AI-altered media being used to misrepresent public figures and their associations.
