Brahmanbaria-2 MP Rumeen Farhana has publicly condemned the circulation of a digitally altered image that depicted her as the Hindu goddess Durga. The image, which appeared on Facebook following her attendance at Durga Puja celebrations in Ashuganj, was allegedly created to incite religious tensions.

What happened

After visiting several Durga Puja mandaps in Ashuganj upazila, photographs of Rumeen Farhana’s attendance were shared on social media. Subsequently, an AI-generated image surfaced on Facebook portraying the MP as the Hindu goddess Durga. Farhana addressed the incident through a post on her verified Facebook account, criticizing those who use such tactics to cultivate hatred under the guise of religious devotion. She argued that wrongdoing, such as corruption or sexual violence, should be judged on moral grounds rather than excused through piety, and emphasized that respecting other faiths should not be viewed as a religious failing. In comments to The Daily Star, Farhana stated that the use of AI to incite division is an insult to both her and the followers of all religions, noting that portraying a person as a deity is inherently disrespectful.
