As search efforts continue for nine Singaporeans missing following flash floods in Tibet and Nepal, deceptive AI-generated images have begun circulating on social media platforms. These fabricated photos, which mix real and AI-manipulated imagery, have raised significant concerns among families and humanitarian organizations regarding the impact on active rescue operations.

What happened

Following the disappearance of nine Singaporeans on August 26, 2026, a travel agency released low-quality scans of travel documents to assist in identification. By August 31, a TikTok post emerged featuring a combination of legitimate photos alongside AI-generated versions of four missing individuals: Rengarajan Prabu, Shalinny Deavy Elan Sozan, Subramaniam Diraviam, and Rajesvaran Ayyavoo.

The AI-generated content contained inaccuracies, such as depicting Shalinny Deavy Elan Sozan wearing a black pottu, a detail her husband confirmed was incorrect as she only wears red. Family members described the images as disrespectful and noted that the altered likenesses do not accurately represent their loved ones, potentially preventing rescuers from identifying the missing individuals correctly.

The Singapore Red Cross warned that these AI images pose a severe risk to relief efforts. By circulating unverified or fabricated visuals, the posts divert attention and resources away from credible, verified information. Experts noted that while individuals may share these posts with the intention of helping, such content creates ambiguity, increases the emotional burden of the families, and potentially leads rescue teams on false leads during a time-sensitive crisis.
