Generative AI platforms are increasingly being used to create or enhance wildlife photography, leading to a surge of manipulated images appearing on forums and databases like iNaturalist and the Macaulay Library. While some users employ AI to remove obscuring elements like leaves or branches, these algorithms can inadvertently introduce parts from different species, resulting in false sightings that mislead ecological research.
Dr. Alexander Lees, an ecologist at Manchester Metropolitan University, highlighted a specific incident involving a false report of a red-winged blackbird in central Brazil. The image, which was actually an epaulet oriole, had been processed through an AI tool to "look better," causing the software to insert features of the red-winged blackbird into the photograph. This error created a record of a species in a geographic area where it had never been documented.
Although outright hoaxes remain relatively rare, researchers argue that the volume of AI-enhanced imagery makes it increasingly difficult to utilize public photos for scientific analysis of species movement in space and time.
