Ram, a brand under the Stellantis conglomerate, recently faced public scrutiny after listing an AI-generated shirt on its official merchandise store. The graphic featured a truck labeled with the Ram brand, yet the design clearly depicted a previous-generation Toyota Tacoma, complete with the incorrect headlights and body shape.
What happened
The incident occurred when an AI-generated image was used for official promotional apparel. Despite the inclusion of the text 'RAM' on the grille and 'RAM POWER' beneath the vehicle, the underlying design was unmistakably a Toyota Tacoma. Further inspection by observers revealed additional errors in the AI-generated artwork, including a flag design that featured only 38 stars.
This event is part of a pattern for the parent company, Stellantis. In March, the official Dodge Instagram account utilized AI to generate 'throwback' photos of classic vehicles, which resulted in historically inaccurate configurations, such as a first-generation Viper with quad-spoke wheels and a nonexistent Neon model. Following the discovery of the errors on the Ram merchandise, the company removed the shirt from its website.
