The post, which questioned the country's border security, quickly gained traction, accumulating over 2,200 views and numerous comments from concerned citizens debating national security and immigration policy. However, subsequent verification efforts proved the footage was misleading and entirely fabricated using artificial intelligence.
What happened
The video, which contained three segments featuring armed men in various settings, was analyzed using both reverse-image searches and forensic AI detection tools. Investigators discovered that the footage was not original content but rather a compilation of static, archival photographs that have been circulating online for years. These images had previously appeared in various news reports and social media posts dating back to at least 2023 to illustrate domestic banditry and security flashpoints in Nigeria.
To create the deceptive clip, the creator utilized generative AI image-to-video tools to animate these pre-existing still photographs. Forensic analysis confirmed the manipulation: the HIVE Detect tool identified the video as likely AI-generated, while VigilAI classified the footage as a deepfake with a 98% confidence score. By framing the post as a rhetorical question about border integrity, the misinformation actor successfully bypassed direct assertions while instigating public fear.
